Dating Advice for Guys - How to Impress Your Date

Dating advice for guys is, I’ve found, essential. Lots of men think they can handle themselves pretty well on a date - and lots of them would be wrong. I’ve been there and done that. Since guys don’t sit around and talk about things like this very often, I’ve put together some dating tips for guys to make it simpler.

Your Appearance Counts

Whether guys want to admit it or not, appearances do count on a date, including what you wear. Take my advice: the laid-back attitude with a sloppy tee-shirt and jeans can be introduced to your date after you’ve been together for a while - because if you show up at her door dressed like a slob, there’ll be no chance for “being together a while.” I know, I know - you want to be the real you. Try being the real you, but well-dressed and tidier. Trust me.

Don’t Assume Anything

Some women move quickly, others slowly. This has nothing to do with whether they are drawn to you. The best dating advice for guys I can give is to play it conservatively on the first date - a good-night kiss is great, but don’t start pawing her or she’ll assume you’re just after sex. It’s not a great way to impress her with your sincerity. Follow her lead on things physical at first.

Don’t Dominate the Conversation

Take my advice, guys: this is a very important dating tip. Talking a bit about yourself is good for letting her get to know you, but if it ends up all about you with no input from her, it will be a disaster. And please, please don’t argue with everything your date says! Pick your discussions (notice I said discussions, not arguments), ask her about herself and don’t insinuate you know more about everything - you’ll come off as arrogant. This is one of the most frequently ignored dating tips for single guys I know of - why must we try to show off how brilliant we are? Take my advice: don’t worry, if you are, she’ll realize it.

Show Up on Time

This sounds like obvious dating advice for guys, but it is often a problem. They assume 7:00 means around 7:00, and so 7:25 is fine, just like it would be for the guys. WRONG. If you absolutely must be late for your date (traffic is horrendous, etc.), be sure to call her as soon as you realize and apologize, giving her an estimate on when you’ll be there.

Don’t Talk About Your Ex

…and don’t ask about hers. You don’t want your first date to turn into a therapy session or a tirade about the evils of former boyfriends/girlfriends/spouses. Leave the past where it should be - in the past.

I know the rules of being a gentleman can be confusing when dating a woman in this day and age, but I’m a guy who is a firm believer in the little gestures. Other columns with relationship tips and dating advice for guys may disagree, but I’ve found that women really notice little courtesies. Opening the door for her, pulling out her chair at the restaurant, etc. are all signs of a gentlemen, and she’ll tell her friends about it later. Women notice the little things about guys.

If you keep in mind my dating advice for guys every time you take a woman out, you’ll soon be dating plenty of women or you’ll be involved in a serious relationship (it’s your call). Why? Because being a genuine, kind and attentive guy are some of the best aphrodisiacs there are for dating women.
