Dating Tips and Hints for the Long Haul
No doubt you’ve read plenty of dating tips and hints that cover lots of first and second date stuff. You know what I mean – tips like being on time, dressing your best, etc. But if you’ve moved past those first few dates and you are now looking at the friendship as something moving somewhere, you need some new dating tips and hints. These are the ones that will keep the dating relationship going after those first few starry-eyed dates.
Don’t Expect Perfection
Too many times, singles are quickly besotted with each other, and then give up when they find one tiny flaw. Here’s a tip: being realistic about dating means cutting each other some slack when you settle in after the first few dates. Nobody can sustain the high level of attention and courtship that goes into the first date or two forever. Hint: don’t give up on a budding relationship the first time your birthday is forgotten or a thoughtless comment is made. Are you perfect? I didn’t think so.
Don’t Neglect Your Family and Friends
Another important dating tip: remember that you had a life before you began dating this person. That means not neglecting your family and friends in order to spend all of your free time with the person you’re dating. Hint: it will lead to boredom – after all, you’ll run out of things to talk about or share if neither of you has a life outside of each other.
Don’t be Confrontational
Don’t pretend problems don’t exist just because you think it’s “too early” in the relationship. Some dating tips and hints may say to keep it light at first, but that doesn’t mean ignoring something that’s really important to you. If you’re truly hurt or sense that there is an issue that your date really won’t see your point of view on, bring it up when you are both relaxed. Here’s an important dating tip hint: don’t be confrontational – just bring up the subject and honestly discuss your different points of view. It’s better to find out in the first few months that you will never agree on having children than to marry and have one of you end up miserable.
Don’t Try to Impress
Lots of dating tips and hints are inter-related – and this one relates directly to the one I just mentioned. Be honest about what you want. Don’t say you are pro-life if you’re pro-choice because you’re trying to impress the person you’re with by agreeing with their standards.
Don’t Take a Relationship for Granted
Although you can’t sustain the courtship phase forever, you can sustain appreciation if you continue to really see and appreciate the person you’re dating. My tip: make the effort to compliment or praise the person you’re with in some way on every date. Hint: taking someone for granted can end a budding relationship quicker than almost anything.
Don’t Smother
There’s not a simpler free dating hint, tip or piece of advice out there. Endless calls, constant demands for attention and putting yourself in competition with his or her friends, pets, etc. will kill your relationship. No one wants to exhaust all of their energy on coddling someone along – it sucks the life out of them.
These dating tips and hints are designed to help you keep things going once you’ve moved on to the stage where you’ve been dating more than a few weeks, but these dating tips can be applied to any relationship. Follow all six of these hints, and you have a good shot at moving from “dating” to a true relationship.
